Psalm 119:105: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Summary

John 1 profoundly commences with the phrase, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This opening sets a foundational framework for understanding the divinity and eternity of Jesus Christ. The designation of Jesus as the Word (Logos) carries with significant implications. Logos is not merely a spoken word but an active, living principle of reason and order; it is through the Logos that the universe is created and sustained.

John 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
He was with God in the beginning.
Everything was created through him; nothing that has been created was made without him.
In him was life, and that life was the light of humanity.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it.
God sent a man named John.
He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him all might believe.
He was not the Light himself, but he was sent to testify about that Light.
That was the true Light, which enlightens everyone who comes into the world.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.
He came to his own people, but they did not accept him.
But to all who accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name:
They were born, not of human origin, nor of human desire or a husband's decision, but of God.
The Word became human and lived among us. We saw his glory, the glory that belongs to the only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John testified about him and exclaimed, "This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.'"
From his fullness, we have all received grace upon grace.
The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, has made him known.
This is the account of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"
He openly admitted, without denial, saying, "I am not the Christ."
They then asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not. Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No."
Then they asked him, "Who are you? We need an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?"
He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Make straight the way of the Lord,' as the prophet Isaiah declared."
The messengers who were sent belonged to the Pharisees.
They questioned him, asking, "Why do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?"
John responded, "I baptize with water, but among you stands someone you do not know.
He is the one who comes after me, but who surpasses me; I am not worthy to untie his sandal straps.
These events took place in Bethabara, across the Jordan River, where John was performing baptisms.
The next day, John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
This is the one I was talking about when I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks above me because he was before me.'
I did not know him; but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel.
And John testified, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him."
I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
I saw, and I testify that this is the Son of God.
The next day, John was standing there again with two of his disciples.
As he watched Jesus walk by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
When the two disciples heard him speak, they followed Jesus.
Then Jesus turned and saw them following. He asked them, "What are you looking for?" They replied, "Rabbi (which means Teacher), where are you staying?"
He said to them, "Come and see." So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent the day with him. It was about four in the afternoon.
One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah," which means the Christ.
He brought him to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, he said, "You are Simon, son of John; you will be called Cephas," which means "a stone."
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. There he found Philip and said to him, "Follow me."
Philip was from Bethsaida, the same hometown as Andrew and Peter.
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about in the Scriptures—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
Nathanael asked him, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Philip answered, "Come and see for yourself."
Jesus saw Nathanael approaching him and said, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"
Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you."
Nathanael responded, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus answered him, "Because I told you I saw you under the fig tree, you believe? You will see greater things than these."
He said to him, "Truly, truly, I tell you, from now on you will see heaven open and God’s angels going up and coming down on the Son of Man."
